was introduced to the art of enameling in the last
year of my graduate studies at Boise State University during a painting class taught by internationally recognized enamel artist, Mr. John Killmaster. I had
no knowledge of the historical background, versatility, and beauty of this medium and was captivated by the radiant appearance of the melted, colored glass fused to metal. There was limitless potential for creative freedom and this inspired me to explore abstraction. I fell under its spell.
In my work I utilize silver, gold, copper foil and wire inlays; use firescale, sheet glass, over-firing; create my own glass lumps; and use liquid enamels to print leaf and metal mesh images. I fire the pieces up to 30 times in the kiln at temperatures ranging from 1350 to 1500 degrees, depending upon the type of enamel being applied.
I am actively responsive and passively open to the unexpected, rather than focusing on the act of control. The work is free from outside constraints and thus is
a completely creative activity. The art uses free, spontaneous line and form, almost entirely independent of representational images. The space is shallow and the enamel color suggests emotion. I respond to what’s discovered through the act of the process. The unique qualities inherent in enameling challenge me as an artist. Professional Enamel Artist
